Emergency Tips
Disasters can happen anytime. Being prepared and knowing what to do before, during, and after can save lives. Let’s get you ready!
Before a Disaster: Get Prepared +
Plan Ahead: Create a family emergency plan. Know your evacuation routes, designate meeting spots, and keep emergency contacts handy.
Build Your Kit: Pack essentials like water (1 gallon/person/day for 3 days), non-perishable food, flashlight, batteries, first aid supplies, medications, and important documents.
Secure Your Home: Anchor heavy furniture, clear flammable materials, and learn how to shut off utilities safely.
Stay Informed: Sign up for local alerts and weather warnings on your phone or radio.
During a Disaster: Stay Safe +
Stay Calm: Panic makes things worse. Focus on following your plan and instructions from authorities.
Floods: Move to higher ground immediately. Never walk or drive through floodwaters—it only takes 6 inches of moving water to knock you down.
Fires: Stay low to avoid smoke, cover your mouth with a cloth, and exit quickly using stairs—not elevators.
Earthquakes: Drop, cover, and hold on. Take shelter under sturdy furniture and stay away from windows and heavy objects.
Listen: Use a battery-powered radio or phone to receive emergency updates and evacuation orders.
After a Disaster: Recover Wisely +
Check for Injuries: Provide first aid and seek medical help if needed. Don’t move seriously injured persons unless in immediate danger.
Inspect Your Surroundings: Avoid damaged buildings, downed power lines, and gas leaks. Report hazards to authorities.
Utilities: Only turn utilities back on after inspections and official clearance. If you smell gas, evacuate immediately.
Document Damage: Take photos and notes for insurance claims.
Take Care of Your Mind: Disasters are stressful. Talk to loved ones, seek support, and give yourself time to recover emotionally.
